The Legal Aid Bureau Against Sexual Harassment and Rape in Detention has announced its "2018 Statistical Report."
The report said that Turkey is the first signatory of the Council of Europe's İstanbul Convention, which was declared in 2011.
According to the report;
- 49 women were subjected to sexual harassment, 3 were subjected to sexual assault.
- The women who were assaulted were between the ages of 10 and 67.
- Among the perpetrators, 32 were police officers, 5 were soldiers/gendarmerie, 2 were special forces, 1 was a correction officer, 15 were ISIS members, 1 was a Syrian soldier.
- Lawsuits do not achieve results.
649 applications since 1997
The report also included figures that have been recorded since the foundation of the Bureau in 1997. Accordingly, between 1997 and December 31, 2018;
- Total applications: 649
- Applications from Turkey 646 (Three applications were made in Germany)
- Applicants who are abroad: 37
- Applicants who are imprisoned in Turkey: 72
17 women tortured with their children
The report said that 105 women were subjected to sexual assault and 544 were subjected to sexual harassment:
- 4 women committed suicide after being raped.
- 1 women was tortured to death.
- A 14-year-old girl was killed by relatives "for honor" after being raped.
- 1 woman died as a long-term result of the torture she was subjected to.
- 1 woman was raped at workplace.
- 1 woman's family made a decision of death for her.
- 4 women were forced to sex work.
- 24 incidents of rape and harassment occurred in unregistered detentions.
- 1 incident of sexual harassment through press occurred.
- 11 women had a miscarriage as a result of torture.
- 17 women were tortured with their children aged between 3 and 10.
- 7 women were impregnated as a result of rape.
- 5 women were forced to virginity control.
- Among the perpetrators, 389 were police officers, 125 were soldiers or gendarmerie officers, 33 were special forces, 22 were village guards, 66 were correction officers.
