The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) shared the "Road Traffic Accident Statistics" for 2020 today (June 2).
According to the statistics of the state agency, 983 thousand 808 traffic accidents occurred in total in the road network of Turkey last year.
While 833 thousand 533 of these traffic accidents were with material loss, 150 thousand 275 resulted in death or injury.
For the accidents involving death or injury, 75.8 percent occurred at inhabited areas and 24.2 percent occurred at uninhabited areas.
While 4 thousand 866 persons were killed in these accidents and 226 thousand 266 persons were injured.
As a result of 150 thousand 275 accidents involving death or injury, 2 thousand 197 people were killed at the accident scene and 2 thousand 669 people injured at traffic accidents and sent to health facilities died within 30 days after accidents due to accidents and their impacts.
Number of casualties on the decrease
According to TurkStat, the number of persons killed in traffic accidents decreased by 11.1 percent compared to the previous year.
While the total road motor vehicles in traffic increased by 4.3 percent in Turkey by 2020, there was a decrease in total accidents by 15.8 percent, accidents involving death or injury by 14.1 percent, accidents with material loss by 16.1 percent, persons killed at accident scene by 13 percent, persons killed at accident follow-up by 9.5 percent and injuries by 20.1 percent.
49.4 percent of deceased were drivers
Among the persons killed in the accidents 49.4 percent of them were drivers, 30.7 percent were passengers and 19.9 percent were pedestrians. Concerning the gender breakdown of persons killed 79.7 percent of them were men and 20.3 percent were women; whereas for the persons injured 71.4 percent of them were men and 28.6 percent were women.
Driver faults were the primary fault
Looking at the 177 thousand 867 total faults causing accidents involving death or injury, it was observed that 88.3 percent of faults were driver faults, 7 percent were pedestrian faults, 2.7 percent were vehicle faults, 1.4 percent were passenger faults and 0.5 percent were road faults.
66.9 percent occurred at day time
Concerning the 150 thousand 275 accidents involving death or injury in 2020 in the road network of Turkey, 66.9 percent occurred at day, 30.4 percent occurred at night and 2.7 percent occurred at twilight.
In Turkey, the distribution of 243 thousand 125 road motor vehicles involved in accidents with death or injury was cars 50.4 percent, motorcycles 18.8 percent, small trucks 15.2 percent, trucks 2.5 percent, road tractors 2.4 percent, minibuses 2.4 percent, buses 1.6 percent, tractors 1.2 percent and the other vehicles 5.5 percent during year 2020.
Distribution by months and days
Accidents most frequently occurred in August with 11.8 percent share whereas accidents least frequently occurred in April with 3.8 percent share. Regarding the distribution among the days of the week, accidents involving death or injury most frequently occurred on Friday with 15.5 percent share and least frequently on Sunday with 12.7 percent share.
