In a statement delivered today (September 1), the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that two more German citizens were detained in Turkey on August 31, and added that the detentions are based political accusations.
The ministry spokesperson stated that the detention was notified to the German Consulate in İzmir by unofficial sources and it was confirmed by the airport police in Antalya.
It was reported that the two detained people have only German citizenship, they haven't been directly connected through phone, and the efforts to provide consular services to the citizens as soon as possible continue.
According to the report by Deustche Welle, 10 German citizens have been held in custody in Turkey due to political reasons.
Among them are Die Welt newspaper's correspondent to Turkey Deniz Yücel who was detained on February 27, 2017, human rights activist Peter Steudtner detained on July 5, 2017 during a workshop meeting in Büyükada in İstanbul, and translator Meşale Tolu detained on May 1, 2017. (HK/TK)
